Joyfully Reviewed Welcomes Olde City, New Blood Author JENNIFER ARMENTROUT + Giveaway!!

Joyfully Reviewed welcomes Olde City, New Blood Author Jennifer Armentrout!!

USA TODAY Bestselling author Jennifer lives in Martinsburg, West Virginia. All the rumors you’ve heard about her state aren’t true. When she’s not hard at work writing. she spends her time reading, working out, watching really bad zombie movies, pretending to write, and hanging out with her husband and her Jack Russel Loki.

Her dreams of becoming an author started in algebra class, where she spent most of her time writing short stories….which explains her dismal grades in math. Jennifer writes young adult paranormal, science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary romance. She also writes adult romance under the name J. Lynn.

Interview

What inspired you to become a writer?

As cliché as it sounds, I’ve always wanted to become a writer. I started off with poetry when I was in middle school and I sucked at it. I wrote my first full length novel when I was in the 8th and 9th grade. I think because I read so much growing up, that’s what inspired me. Now I write because I bore easily and it keeps me from being bored. =)

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Really bad TV like Honey Boo Boo

When you found out you were being published the first time who is the first person you shared the news with?

My husband

What are you reading right now?

Nothing actually. Gasp! I know. I’m in a reading funk right now, so I’m searching for something to read.

What authors are on your auto-buy list?

JR Ward, Rachel Vincent, Jeri Smith-Ready, Wendy Higgins, Leigh Fallon, Kim Harrington, Jana Olive, Erica O’Rourke. I could go on and on

If you could co-author with anyone who would it be and why?

One of the guys I listed above.

You write under two names in different genres: Jennifer Armentrout and J. Lynn. Can you tell us a little about both?

Honestly, they are the same. I don’t really write under two names because one is adult and one is YA, because that’s not true. Obsession, an adult novel is coming out under my real name. The two names are mostly marketing and shelving reasons. I write fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary under both names, but my adult stuff is really, really adult.

What made you decide to write paranormal predominantly for young adults and contemporary romance for adults?

My first adult book is an Urban Fantasy (Unchained) but it just hasn’t come out yet. And I also have two contemporary YA books coming out with Disney/Hyperion in 2014. So I could back and forth on both names.

What is your writing process like? Do you focus on one story at a time or go back and forth between them?

I focus on one story at a time—one world. I do not edit one series while writing the other. I keep them completely separate. Sometimes I write all day and other times I write in 25 minute burst, around 5 or 6 sessions, and I usually write more if I do it that way.

Your book covers are some of the most striking out there. Do you have a lot of say in what the covers?

I do have some say. Like if I completely hated a cover, I’m sure they’d do something about that, but it’s the pubs that do such a great job with the covers.

Are any of your characters based on the people in your life?

Lesa and Carissa from the Lux Series are loosely based on my friends Lesa and Carissa.

Does music influence your writing?

Sometimes. Like if I’m writing a fight scene or a sexy scene, then yes.

Woohoo!! You have several new releases hitting shelves soon! You had a stand-alone title release in September and coming up there will some releases from each of your Hot YA series’. Can you tell our readers a bit about each of them?

Okay. Here I go. There’re a lot of them.

Cursed (September 2012) is about a teenage girl who dies and her little sister brings her back, but now whatever she touches dies. It’s a paranormal, but a mystery more than anything.

Cursed

by

Jennifer Armentrout

Dying Sucks…

and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things–including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he’s a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she’s more than interested. There’s just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden’s adopted father, a man she’s sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out. However, she’s willing to do anything to hold her sister’s hand again. And hell, she’d also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn’t?

But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not’ve been an accident at all, she’s not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life.

For real this time.

CURSED Book Trailer

Tempting the Player (October 23, 2012) is the second book in the Gamble Brother Series under my name J. Lynn and features Chad and Bridget which were introduced in the first book Tempting the Best Man. Chad is a player on and off the baseball field until he meets Bridget and strikes out. Ha. You see what I did there?

Deity (Nov 6, 2012) and Elixir (novella Nov. 27, 2012) are the next books in the Covenant Series, which centers around Alexandria Andros and is based on Greek Mythology. Deity by far is the steamiest YA book I’ve written. Giggles. Elixir is told from Aiden St. Delphi’s POV and actually picks up at the end of Deity.

Deity: The Third Covenant Novel

by

Jennifer Armentrout

Covenant, Book 3

History is on repeat, and things didn’t go so well the last time.

Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her eighteenth birthday–to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner… and so is Aiden.

If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time “training”–which really is just Seth’s code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time–she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she’s caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed… and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate…

Elixir: A Covenant Novella

by

Jennifer Armentrout

Covenant, Book 3.5

Aiden St. Delphi will do anything to save Alex.

Even if it means doing the one thing he will never forgive himself for.

Even if it means making war against the gods.

Opal (Dec 6, 2012) is the third book in the Lux Series, which is about Katy, a teenager book blogger and Daemon Black, the arrogant, insufferable, but sexy alien who lives to get on Kat’s nerves. It is also YA.

Opal (A Lux Novel)

by

Jennifer Armentrout

Lux, Book 3

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

Obsession (March 2013) this is an adult book under my real name that takes place in the same world as the Lux series, but is a totally different spin on things.

What other events are attending in the future besides Olde City, New Blood?

I’m going on tour for the release of Deity in November. You can see the tour stops HERE.

Then in December, I will be during a release party for Opal with Pepe Toth (the male model on the covers of the Lux Series) in the city where fans have chosen. Contest details HERE.

Then I’ll be at RT in Kansas City next year and BEA in New York City in 2013.

Joyfully Reviewed Welcomes Olde City, New Blood Author JANET BREAKFIELD + Giveaway!!

Joyfully Reviewed welcomes Olde City, New Blood Author Janet Breakfield!!

Janet has always love books and reading. She was a country music singer until she decided to stay at home to raise her son. Writing came naturally to her and she enjoys the quiet time she spends in her sock feet with her computer on her lap.

“Nightwish” was researched in Romania. Janet loved the folklore and breathtaking landscape of the Carpathian Mountains. The people of Romania didn’t speak English, so Janet had to learn some Romanian to communicate with them. They were among the most hospitable people she has ever met. She stayed with friends in Lasi for some of her stay. Bucharest was a large city with beautiful historic buildings, but the countryside was the most enjoyable place to visit.

“Nightwish” has a great deal of Romanian language in the text. She feels it was detrimental to the story.

The south is full of legend and folklore. That’s where Janet has called home all her life.. She has always believed that it’s one of the most beautiful and historic places to live. Although she has traveled extensively, she welcomes the site of the old south and home.

She enjoys the simple things in life..Family, friends and ice tea. She always says that the simple things in life are all that matter.

“Bayou Legend” was written from her experience being married to her best friend, who happens to be Cajun born. It wasn’t hard to find legend and stories among the Cajun people. This book was researched in true Cajun towns like Thibodaux, Lockport, Houma, Kraemer, Chackbay, Choctaw…towns most folks never hear of. Those are the true Cajuns. They live the life of a Cajun on the bayous. “Loup Garou” is one legend that parents have handed down to their children for decades. The stories are meant to make children behave and stay out of the woods by themselves. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.

There is a great deal of “Cajun French” language in “Bayou Legend” that was researched in the French Quarter.

Janet looks forward to writing the sequel to “Nightwish” which will be called “Nightwish II – Eriq’s Quest”. Hopefully it should be released in early 2012.

Janet would like to thank all her readers for taking the time to enjoy her books.

INTERVIEW

Hi Janet! Please tell us a little bit about your Bayou Legend series.

I have been a southern girl all my life. The bayous of Louisiana have always fascinated me with their mystical voodoo and legends of werewolf shifters. New Orleans has a wealth of history and paranormal lore. The swamps and legends made writing this series so much easier because I am writing what I know. Bayou Legend is the first novel in the series. Sacred Bayou is 2nd and now releasing on Halloween 2012 is the third novel called Bayou Guardian. The story is about a Treater or nature healer named Emily Bougouis who in thrown into the dark world of the Loup Garou or werewolf shifter. The series tells her thrilling story of life on Bayou Lafourche while adding characters like Fallen Angels, werewolves, Voodoo priestess’ and magical creatures that can blend into the cypress trees. There will be more tantalizing books in this series and I have enjoyed the journey writing them.

Bayou Legend

Janet Breakfield

The Bayou Series, Book 1

Passion, Voodoo and Curses abound in this thrilling,

supernatural story of life in the swamps and bayous of South Louisiana.

The responsibility of being the newest “Treater” rest soley on Emily’s
shoulders. She has never loved a man until she reunites with her childhood friend, Tanner Guidry. Little does she know that she is his salvation
made flesh.

The curse of “Loup Garou” is like a second skin attached to Tanner thanks to Ursulla, the wicked VooDoo witch that cursed his family when she couldn’t have his Grandfather years earlier. Now all of the men in Tanner’s family carry the curse.

Will Emily’s love and magic be enough to save Tanner from the curse and the Witch that wants to destroy him? Will Ursulla’s secret be revealed as she tries to destroy Tanner and Emily?

Or will her love spell using Tristan to seduce Emily be enough
temptation to tear them apart?

The Bayou Series, Book 2

Just when Emily Bougouis think she has her life and future figured out, all hell breaks loose. Betrayal by the only man she has ever loved is bitter on her tongue as she loses all she hold dear to her heart.Even though her world is crumbling down around her, she still performs her duty as the “Treater” or healer of the people on the bayou. The Houmas Indians come to Emily for help to save their ancient burial grounds. Strange mystical, and frightening forces surround the mounds. Emily has to find her courage, and also a way to stop the destruction coming from a construction company’s demolition plans. By destroying the burial mounds, evil skinwalkers would be able to claim the souls of the dead buried there, denying them entrance to the afterlife. She needs help fighting them and she finds it in the strangest place. Emily is star struck when she meets Merrick Talbot, who just happens to be the head of the construction company bent on destroying the burial mounds. The handsome stranger has a shadowed past and Emily doesn’t trust him. But soon the flames of passion begin to wash away her doubt. The heat between Emily and Merrick is unbelievable, and she can’t help but lose all control around him. But can she trust him with her life? Can the love and passion she feels be enough to get her through the biggest heartache she has ever suffered? And will she be able to get revenge on those who stole part of her life away?

She must overcome her fears, and stop the evil destruction at the same time that she is falling in love with Merrick. Life can be a real bitch for a Psychic Healer!

I read that you researched “Nightwish” in Romania. What was that like?

Romania is an absolutely beautiful country. The Carpathian Mountains are breathtaking. I wrote in Nightwish what I witnessed for myself. The lore and vampires that are mentioned in the story were true legends. I met many Romanians that actually believed in the myths. Also Gypsy’s played a major role in getting information. Life is different in Romania and some may think it primitive. But I thought is was a wonderful place to learn about history. Nightwish was written with a great deal of fact to set off the fictional characters. There’s nothing like walking into a monastery that is 700 years old and watching the hairs on your arms stand on end….if from nothing else, from so much history. And yes, for those wondering….sometimes, I got scared. There were some really spooky places. Like Poenari, Dracula’s real castle that lies in ruin. Nightwish was my first novel and not affiliated with the Bayou Series.

Nightwish
by
Janet Breakfield

Enter the exotic world of Nisha Runninghorse, a Native American woman born part human, part demon.

The fate of teh race of Moroii Vampires and her people, the Cherokee, are tied together in an extraordinary twist of fate.

She must fulfill the prophecy to free the Moroii of Strigoi control and destroy her demon ancestor Jumlin or be destroyed herself. How will she choose between marius, the man in her visions and Batarlow, the man she was destined to marry? This sexy heroin will turn the world upside down to defend her people and the men she loves.

Will you be researching any place exciting for your next work?

Since I am starting book five in the Bayou Series, my research will continue in Voodoo and mythology of south Louisiana. I have found that no matter how much I study the heritage, there is always more to learn.

What are you currently working on?

Book five in the Bayou Series that has yet to be titled.

What pulled you towards paranormal writing?

Simply a fascination with the supernatural. I like to discern things that are normally not understood. If it’s unbelievable, I want to shot at it. Some call it curiosity, I call it being open minded. I examine all possibilities. And I love to ask the question…..what if? I try to think outside the box…so to speak.

What inspired you to become a writer?

This one is easy. There has to be an outlet for all the characters and voices roaming around in my head. I think about what my characters will do next all through the day and even when I try to sleep. I don’t think I’ll ever have writers block, because they won’t shut up long enough for me to lose new ideas.

Are any of your characters based on the people in your life?

Well, yes and no. I did write about a skinny Scottish man in a kilt that I met in New Orleans that offered me a shot of whiskey when I scraped my knee on the sidewalk. And I killed a friend of mine off in Nightwish….which she didn’t appreciate. But I try to be nice and not murder any friends of family members.

If you could co-write with another author who would it be?

Cynthia Eden

Does music influence your writing?

yes it actually does. I use at least a couple songs in each book. For just a sneak peak, there is a song called “New Orleans Lady” in my soon to be released novel Bayou Guardian.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

other than chocolate? That’s my secret.

List three of your favorite things.

I’m a full time photographer, so I would say photography and I love haunted houses and herbal gardening.

What books have most influenced your life?

Jane Austin’s books were my favorites when I was a kid. But I have graduated to Fifty Shades of Grey as an adult.

What gets you the most excited about the upcoming Olde City, New Blood Conference?

I love the city of St Augustine. The beach has been part of my life since I was a child…I mean who wouldn’t want to try and find the fountain of youth. J Honestly I enjoy talking to others about my writing and the panels are a great way to meet readers and other authors.

Where can your readers find you in the next year besides the OCNB conference?

I am attending The Silken Sands Conference, and RWA in Atlanta. My schedule is still filling up for next year.

Confessions of an Author Chick
by
Amber Hart

Confession. Four years ago I discovered my calling.

Me: I’m gonna write a book, it’ll be awesome. Or so I think. Turns out, book sucks. Because, you know, it’s my first. It’s me feeling my way through a dark cave wondering if I’ll ever get out alive. When I emerge two things are clear. One, I never want to do that alone again. And two, when I go back, I’m going to be packed with knowledge to navigate this confusing labyrinth. In truth, there are many tunnels, roads, whatever metaphor you want to pick, to travel. None is more right than the other. It’s about finding what works for you. Things that work for me: caffeine, quiet, poetry, reading books in the same genre that I write, but perhaps the biggest of all…creativity.

You can’t write a book without creativity. Creativity needs a release. It needs to climb mountains and bleed through the lyrics of music and rear its head in the activities of your day to day. It’s not something that magically comes with a laptop and a cup of coffee. In other words: get up and do something. Let creativity be a river that flows through the channels of your life. Join a writing group, have beta readers, splash amid ocean waves while the sun breaks itself across the sky like an egg, reread your favorite book, rediscover why it inspired you to write in the first place, whatever works. But know that it’s not always fun. It’s not always taking that vacation to the place you forever dreamed of visiting. It can be downright infuriating. Like a shitty childhood, a crap job that you hate, losing someone important to you. Use that to draw from. Evoke an emotion so powerful that it pours into the words and worlds you create. Make your readers cry. Make them laugh. Make them mad. Surprise them. Make them feel pain. I guarantee your book will be better because of it. Sometimes the darkest turmoil brings the brightest hope. But for Pete’s sake, give them hope. Give them something to cling to. Create a vice grip so tight that they’ll never escape the visions you paint with your words.

Once creativity has been given an outlet, write. Ideas are born the spawns of inspiration. Figure out what inspires you. Outline, if outlines work for you. Fly by the seat of your pants like something wild and unplanned, if that’s what makes you happy. Don’t be afraid to switch it up. I don’t know about you, but I get bored easily. My forthcoming book was written freely, nothing but my thoughts and a blank page joining hands. The book I’m currently writing is outlined chapter by chapter. It’s not the same every time. At least not for me. I need room to roam freely with my imaginary characters, knowing that the next novel won’t ever be exactly like the last. Nor will the process. But the backbone never changes. Always creativity.

Oh, my lucky stars BOOK SOMETHING OR OTHER is finished! What next? Edit. Revise. Edit again. Let someone else watch—edit—your baby for you. It’s hard, I know. Really, I do. It’s mine. I don’t like to share. Give it back. This book rocks! I’m the worst author ever. I should write more novels. What was I thinking? Enough novels to fill all the shelves in every bookstore around the world! They’re gonna hate it. I’m amazing! This is 100% natural, the thoughts that creep into your mind like a pesky spider that weaves webs of doubt and mixed emotions. Deep breath. Wait. Read their comments. Fix problem areas. Edit again. Polish that manuscript so bright that it shines from miles away. Then query agents.

Rejection sucks. Period. Know that it’ll happen and it’ll be as though a thousand angry wasps are stinging the shit out of you. Let it happen. Don’t swat them away. Don’t build a tolerance to the sting. The sting of rejection is a motivator to become a better writer. Agent input is gold. Even if it comes in the form of a rejection. Use it. Make changes. Query others. Maybe someone will reply with a yes! Maybe not. Less than 1% of writers are agented. Self publishing and small publishers are always an option. If that book is meant to stay in your document folder for all of eternity, move on. Write another one. Or two. Or five. Discover your creative muses and transform them into something beautiful. Remember, rejection is not the same thing as failure. Rejection is a catalyst for greatness. Failure is what happens when the catalyst, by the author’s choice, dies.

Never.
Give.
Up.

BEFORE YOU

Sneak peek into her new novel, BEFORE YOU.

Some say love is deadly. Some say love is beautiful. I say it is both.

Faith Watters spent her junior year traveling the world, studying in exquisite places, before returning to Oviedo High School. From the outside her life is picture-perfect. Captain of the dance team. Popular. Happy. Too bad it’s all a lie.

It will haunt me. It will claim me. It will shatter me. And I don’t care.

Eighteen-year-old Diego Alvarez hates his new life in the States, but staying in Cuba is not an option. Covered in tattoos and scars, Diego doesn’t stand a chance of fitting in. Nor does he want to. His only concern is staying hidden from his past—a past, which if it were to surface, would cost him everything. Including his life.

At Oviedo High School, it seems that Faith Watters and Diego Alvarez do not belong together. But fate is as tricky as it is lovely. Freedom with no restraint is what they long for. What they get is something different entirely.

Love—it will ruin you and save you, both.
