Bethany and Sam have lived together for eight years. She is hoping this Christmas he will finally propose. Although they share everything as though they are married, Bethany would like that ring and piece of paper to show. As Christmas approaches, Sam informs Bethany that he will be working and so would like to go ahead and give her her Christmas gift early. Bethany is excited to see that her gift is small and appears to be jewelry. Once she opens it, she is heartbroken to find it only contains a charm bracelet with charms denoting places and things that she and Sam had visited and shared over the past. She realizes that Sam is not willing to promise a future together. Feeling like this is the last straw, Bethany walks away telling him she feels like a roommate with benefits!
A Charmed Life was a charming read . . . in the beginning. Then it is revealed that while Sam seems so sweet he really doesn’t get it. I could NOT understand how this guy who had been with Bethany for eight years didn’t ever know what she liked and/or didn’t like!
I have to say that a lot of the secondary characters helped Sam see the errors of his way in A Charmed Life. Sam needed blatant in-your-face things and not the beating around the bush stuff that is the normal for Bethany.
In the end, A Charmed Life, still made it feel like Sam needed to cave-in to get what he wanted. The characters weren’t fully fleshed out, either. I’m not sure how these two met and why they are together. Obviously Sam doesn’t know as much about Bethany as he believes he does and, for some reason, Bethany accepts what he did in the end without saying much about it. It was as though in A Charmed Life, she didn’t care how she got to the altar, just as long as she got there.
