White House PR specialist, Cara Cranshaw, has been dating reporter Max Gray before the elections. Now that the president is in office, she feels it would be a conflict of interest to continue to be with Max, and she is attempting to put a stop to it. It doesn’t help her position when a scandal erupts, and she is forced to try to push Max away even more. However, Max isn’t giving in very easily, and he just knows Cara is hiding something involving the president. Max is determined to get to the bottom of it, but he wasn’t banking on the secret she was keeping from him either.
Max doesn’t do forever. Given his past, he doesn’t want any ties to anyone, yet he can’t seem to step away from Cara. He is looking to continue a “dating” relationship, but he is very reluctant to wait for the president’s term to end and the possibility of a second term is rather daunting to Max. When the story breaks about the president’s past and he sees that Cara is acting suspiciously, Max is determined to put his skills to the test to get to the story. However, he is sure there is an even larger story hidden within plain sight, but he wasn’t banking on Cara’s story.
A Conflict of Interest was a page-turning, keep-you-engrossed, waiting to see how things would turn out read!! I thoroughly enjoyed watching Max and Cara work out their issues along with every-day life. At times I found myself wanting to shake both Max and Cara because of things they were attempting to do in A Conflict of Interest, but in the end I was happy they worked through things. I also liked the way Cara didn’t force some things the way Max seemed to want her to do in A Conflict of Interest instead, he had to make the decision!
The secondary characters added to the story, but the one that was tossed in towards the end seemed a bit out of place in A Conflict of Interest. I did like that Cara’s sister seemed to be quite manipulative and that she seemed to inhabit that billionaire life that so many Hs get in these stories.
I also liked the set-up for future stories, and I’m waiting eagerly to see how they turn out, as well.
