The master of the castle, Stephen Garrath, has devised a clever weapon that will destroy his enemy Robert Demeresna.  He has gifted to Robert his prized female, known as the Black Mare.  Robert is instantly suspicious of Stephen’s gift, but accepts the beautiful woman.  However, he won’t allow himself to get close to her.

Alexis Khayne has hated the life she accepted at an early age thinking it would be better.  Being known as the Black Mare has made her Stephen’s toy.  One he uses with no thought as to how it will affect her.  Stephen sent Alexis to other men’s beds, making her do things she wouldn’t normally do.  It was a horrible existence and one she hoped to escape.  Her escape comes sooner than she realizes and at the hands of the most horrible person alive, the Bloody Baron.  Or is he?  There is something about Robert she finds fascinating, something that grows with the challenges ahead and that might bring them closer.

Before the Storm is one exciting read.  I found myself trying to read faster to see what was going to happen next and how Robert and Alexis would conquer all their enemies.  Ms. Perera knows how to weave a very intricate plot keeping the reader on the edge of their seat.  Before the Storm has many interesting characters, with each one bringing something to the main story.  You can’t help but enjoy them all!  Great job!
