Carrie Hatcher is a widow trying to support herself and two servants during the Civil War. Now the Confederate Army has left a wounded soldier with her, and she has no way to care for him.

Carrie realizes the only thing she has of any value is herself—and so, being a practical woman, she decides to become a prostitute.

Colonel Wesley McEwen, the injured soldier in Carrie’s care, makes her a proposition—a bag of gold coins in exchange for her complete submission to him for one week. Carrie, being no fool, accepts. But neither one is prepared for the feelings they have for each other. And Wesley has a secret that could ruin their fragile relationship. Will they let go of the past, for a future together?

Bought and Paid For by Debra Glass was an emotional story about the reality of poverty during war time. I really felt a sense of the time and place, historically. All the little details worked together to make it seem accurate and realistic. The two main characters, Wesley and Carrie, are both strong and stubborn, and have obviously had to overcome some serious setbacks in their lives.

The book’s strengths are its realistic story and historical accuracy. It seems evident that Ms. Glass has done her research and has a strong feeling for the time period.

This book is not a light romance; what it is, however, is a story with a strong cast of characters, a real sense of history, and a lot of intense love scenes. I would definitely recommend it to fans of historically accurate erotic romance set during the Civil War.
