James Truman could never live up to his father’s expectations. He wasn’t jock, he wasn’t popular, and he wasn’t straight. His father tolerated him, until he found out he was gay, then he ignored him completely. Payne Rogan was everything James wasn’t; he was popular, star of the basketball team, and dated James’s sister Ava in high school. Payne became James’ nemesis. It’s not until they graduate college that Payne and James reconnect and who Payne really is comes out of the closet.
The beginning of Dreams Come True is a story of angst-filled youth. James’s struggle for acceptance from his peers, his parents, and himself, and his need to hide his sexual orientation, are portrayed effortlessly. Then James and Payne have to come to terms with who they are. It’s a beautiful, albeit, painful process. Lisa Marie Davis has a talent for developing great characterization and emotion in her work. Dreams Come True is a relatively short story with a lot of depth. James and Payne are believable characters and their love story is told with wit and charm.
