Marsi will do almost anything to avoid the miserable future she will face if she marries the man she is betrothed to. So she disguises herself (not very well) as a young boy and accompanies her young cousin (the future King of Scots) on a secret journey across the highlands. One thing she doesn’t count on is the mutual attraction to Sir Ivor “Hawk” Mackintosh, the man sent to protect her cousin. But, Marsi is still keeping her heritage a secret, as Hawk thinks she is just a young maid accompanying the boy. Just when she finally thinks she has found a man she can love in Hawk her secrets might just pull them apart forever.
Summoned by the King to guard his son from potential death, Sir Ivor “Hawk” Macintosh arrives to find not only is he protecting the future king but a young boy and a nurse as well. What is quickly evident to him is that the young lad is actually a young maid. But Hawk is intrigued by the young lass and the attraction between them grows as the journey continues. Unfortunately, so does the danger surrounding them. Can the two of them be truthful and compromise where they need to so that they can listen to their hearts.
Amanda Scott never disappoints with her Scottish Highlander novels. Highland Hero is another example why. She makes her women strong and her men strong in morals as well as fighting skills. In Highland Hero, Hawk knows what he wants, but also knows that to take what he wants might just jeopardize many highlanders’ futures, so he struggles with what to do. I found Highland Hero a well plotted and enjoying read.
