The mighty Joshua “J.L.” Merrill has been brought to his knees by a woman. As a love ‘em and leave ‘em type of guy, J.L.’s ego is viciously bruised when he is dumped by the woman he has been dating for nearly a year. Concerned, his friends drag him out for a relaxing, fun-filled night, determined to comfort his broken heart.
Since the moment she met him seven years ago, Derica Washington has secretly had a crush on J.L. Merrill. But, she never acted on her desire because J.L. is a handsomely, dashing playboy and Derica will not be one of his many bed playmates.
Now, lonesome and heartbroken, J.L. is focusing his all his alluring charm on Derica; whilst, she is determined not to fall under his spell. Will J.L be able to convince Derica otherwise?
I found Asha King’s How Can You Mend a Broken Heart to be a peculiar novella. While Derica and JL are supposed to be the main characters of the storyline; I feel that their circle of friends takes up almost as much of the storyline as them – which leaves me with a somewhat irksome feeling by the conclusion because of the overall page shortness. If the story had been much longer, I feel that the extension secondary character development would have fit much better, leading much better into the next narrative installment of A Circle of Friends. Regardless of that fact, the sexual explorations between Derica and JL are well written and I was intrigued enough to discover just how the plot would unfold. All in all, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is a decent read.
