Martin Proctor has been a cop for a long time, but his years on the force are not responsible for his high solve rate. Unbeknownst to his colleagues, Martin has premonitions that help him solve, or even prevent, crimes. Unfortunately, he can’t save everyone. When one man he tries to save from being murdered ends up dying anyway, he meets the man’s brother, Justin Franklin. Fellow cop Justin is attractive, gay, and out—unlike Martin.
When they end up working closely together on the murder case, Martin finds himself more and more drawn to Justin. With his visions telling him Justin is in grave danger, can Martin figure out a way to keep his secrets, solve the crime, and get his man in more ways than one?
Despite a very cool premise, I found Premonitions disappointing. Martin’s ability to see events before they happen is really cool, and the way he used his mysterious visions was too. He’s kind of an Everyman type, just trying to do the best he can but not always succeeding, which I liked. Watching him struggle with keeping his talent (and its role in Justin’s brother’s death) secret from Justin made me want to read on. What didn’t work for me was the too-quick development of feelings between the two men, especially on Martin’s end. I also found Justin’s behavior toward the end inexplicable, given that he believed in Martin’s abilities. Premonitions is an interesting tale, but it didn’t quite have the depth I was hoping for.
