After they were both life-threateningly injured dealing with an obsessive stalker, Detective Andrew Carmichael and paramedic Nick Swain tried to move on with their lives. Their relationship seemed to be strengthened by the adversity—at least at first. Now they’re both dealing with PTSD and job-related stress, and all they ever do is fight. The unraveling of their relationship is tearing them both apart. Andrew still loves Nick with all his heart, but he has to wonder…would it be better to let Nick go and let him be happy?
Talk about a heart-wrenching read! I teared up several times while reading Search Me. I loved Andrew and Nick in Cover Me, and the thought of them breaking up was awful to me. After what they went through, though, with Andrew being shot and Nick being viciously attacked, both men have major issues. Neither of them is much for talking. They’ve mostly avoided the counselors their bosses wanted them to see. On top of all that, both of them have pressure-cooker jobs that constantly stress them out. It’s a recipe for disaster, as far as their relationship is concerned.
Andrew is desperate to save their relationship, and tries to set up a weekend away. Unfortunately, he begins to wonder if he’s holding onto Nick for the right reasons. His agonizing over his feelings, and over what would make Nick happiest, is painful to read. There were many times I doubted they could fix things.
Fortunately, the love between the two men shines through even their darkest hours. I really enjoyed Search Me, and I’d recommend it to fans of LA Witt, anyone who likes cop stories, and anyone in the mood for a very emotional but ultimately uplifting read.
(Note: I would NOT read this one without reading Cover Me first.)
