Daniel “Web” Weber is a security guard at a failing science center. Jesse Ray Jones is a taxidermist called in to help rejuvenate the artifacts so the center can obtain a grant that could keep it open. Web and Jesse are working on a pretty strong attraction as Jesse spruces up the center’s stuffed inhabitants, but Web’s personal problem; who goes by the name of George, and the murder of the science center’s supervisor are putting a damper on their romance.
George is the bane of Web’s existence. He makes his presence known daily, but doesn’t interfere with the budding romance between Web and Jesse. In fact, Jesse is very cool when he learns about George. I can’t say much more about mysterious George without giving away Sleepwalker’s storyline. Suffice to say, he’s stuck in Web’s head. Finding out who George is changed my feelings for Web and Jesse a bit. Instead of thinking of Web as a simple guy who’s shy and a bit of a loner, I thought of him as a simple guy who’s shy and a bit of a loner who has been dealt a really crappy hand. I wanted to take Web home and care for him, or at the very least, see him get his happily ever after right then and there. I fell for Jesse and Web the moment Jesse found out about George. Web endeared himself to me before that – his notebook, his clip-on tie, and his attempts to seduce Jesse are so damn cute, but seeing Jesse handle Web so sweetly and Web’s insecurity about it all made me love them both that much more.
Sleepwalker is not what I expected, which is exactly what I expect from Jordan Castillo Price, and one of the reasons I love her work so much. Sleepwalker is full of suspense, anticipation, eroticism, donuts, and Mountain Dew. It’s sad, yet hopeful and has a cast of colorful characters that make up Web’s loving, over-protective family and his dysfunctional co-workers. While Sleepwalker ends on a happy note, I think the adventures are just beginning for Jesse and Web.
