Things are going pretty well for Professor Sebastian Swift. He’s basically dating police chief Max Prescott, and he enjoys teaching at the local university. When one of his students comes to him for help, Swift does what he can, but doing so may cost him his relationship with Max, his professional career, his hard-fought battle against his personal demons, and quite possibly, his life.
Come Unto These Yellow Sands – aside from being a tale of murder and deceit – is an entertaining, poetic narrative. Appropriately timed quotes create mood and emotion while Choose Your Own Adventure anecdotes add whimsy and offer some perspective on Swift’s feelings and predicaments. But Lanyon’s own lyrical voice shines brightest. Swift is a sophisticated intellectual and a recovering addict—an interesting dichotomy. His vice threatens to drag him back down, but he has a lot of fight left in him and a good guy by his side. Max is loyal, dependable, reserved, and yet intense. The mystery of Come Unto These Yellow Sands remains suspenseful throughout while Max and Swift’s relationship grows steadily alongside it. Come Unto These Yellow Sands is wistful at times, witty at others, and unerringly riveting and romantic.
