Vlad Tepish may be thought of as the original Dracula but he doesn’t care for the comparison. He is after all stronger and darker than the Dracula made famous by the silver screen. Vlad’s centuries on earth have turned him into a cynical and sometimes tyrannical leader of his vampire line. He doesn’t dream of such lofty things as love and happiness; women fulfill a need. He hasn’t been attached to a woman in quite a long time but it doesn’t take Vlad long to realize that the beautiful Leila is going to upset his world.
Leila Dalton has been living under the alias of “Frankie” for years. A horrible accident in her youth turned her into a monster of sorts. Her touch literally shocks people and allows her to see glimpses into the lives of the people she’s touching. While Leila believes this makes her a monster to others this makes her a commodity to be used. When Leila is taken against her will she finds an ally in Vlad for they now have a common enemy. Will Leila and Vlad be able to keep business and pleasure separate while they search for the evil mastermind behind the attacks on them?
Jeaniene Frost’s Once Burned is mesmerizing! Vlad and Leila burn with fiery passion and light up the pages with their witty banter! I’m in love with both of them. Once Burned is a first-rate paranormal romance and it cements Frost’s status as the Queen of creating Super Couples. Once Burned is a spin-off of Frost’s wildly popular Night Huntress series. In that series Frost penned the infamous Cat and Bones. With the Night Prince series Frost delves into the life of one of my favorite characters Vlad Tepish. I’ve loved his every appearance in the Night Huntress series so it is thrilling to read a series that is dedicated to him.
Once Burned does not disappoint Ms. Frost has delivered another couple to root for, pray for and follow into the bowels of hell. I was already half in love with Vlad and found it hard to imagine the perfect woman for him but Leila is a powerful force to be reckoned with. At the beginning of Once Burned she has yet to fully understand the power she holds but throughout the story she comes to realize her true potential as an individual and as possibly one half of an extremely powerful couple. One of my favorite things about the story—besides the incredible sexual tension— is the fact that Vlad can read Leila’s mind and she knows it. The way these two communicate is intimate and seductive. It brings the reader closer to the characters thoughts and feelings. I thought Leila’s reaction to learning about his mind reading ability was funny and brave; she took it in stride instead of freaking out about it. This gives you a good look into Leila’s character. She is a roll-with-the-punches type of girl. She’s been down on her luck a lot and been dealt a rough hand but she has also learned a lot about life and people. I believe her experiences and Vlad’s past experiences make them more compatible. He can teach her to be stronger and she can teach him to be softer. If these two characters were starring in a T.V. show we would be giving them a cheesy nickname like “Vlada” or “Leilad” because their chemistry is impossible to ignore as it causes the pages to sizzle.
Okay, so the couple is perfect and so is the story! The plot line behind Once Burned is mysterious and enthralling. The reader will be taken on a mysterious journey and experience some amazing and captivating action sequences. These scenes are freakin’ cool! The kind that you pause and rewind to see again. What is left to say? Once Burned is a MUST read! I’m Joyfully Recommending it and I think I might expire from anticipation before the next book comes out!
Prepare yourself for a new addiction because one taste of Once Burned won’t be enough.
